That’s the best way to describe this style card.
Known as an Explosion Pop-Up Card this amazing card is surprisingly straight-forward to make and will certainly make people smile.
I would love to take credit for this card, however, the idea has come from, I believe Karen Burniston on YouTube as her tutorial was the oldest one I could find, the fold is an origami fold which I imagine is very old and then someone adapted it into a card form.
The most common version is with the pop-up Birthday Cake in the centre which I’ve shown above. I then made the same one again with the same tiered pop-up but this time covering it with flowers, to look like a planter.
The thing I love about this card style is the built-in envelope, with everything folding up neatly inside.

To make these cards you will need…
1 piece of 12″ x 6″ white cardstock for the outer case/envelope.
Score along the long side at 5″, 5.1/8, 10.1/8, 10.1/4 & 10.3/8
2 pieces of 6″ x 10″ pattern paper for the side pop-up panels.
1 piece of 10″ x 3.7/8 white cardstock for the middle section.
Score along the 10″ side at 5″
1 piece of 3″ x 3″ white cardstock for the bottom pop-up tier.
Score along one of the sides at 1/4″, 1.1/2 & 2.3/4
1 piece of 2.1/2 x 2.3/4 white cardstock for the middle pop-up tier.
Score along the longer side at 1/4″ 1.1/4, 2.1/2
1 piece of 2″ x 2.1/2 white cardstock for the top pop-up tier.
Score along the longer side at 1/4″, 1.1/2 & 2.1/4
2 pieces of 5.3/4 x 1.3/8 pattern paper to decorate the envelope closure.
1 piece of 5.3/4 x 4.3/4 pattern paper to decorate the front of the envelope.
For the magnets, I used the 16mm x 2mm strong ones. I think I’ve found the same one on eBay here.
