Hi everyone, I’m so excited to share today’s project with you.
Here’s my Large Backpack Gift Bag
I only made one of these and the vision in my head turned out better then expected. The brown straps and hook detail really finish it beautifully.
This is certainly a big project in terms of time and card needed, its perfect for a rainy afternoon of crafting.
The idea for this is to give to someone who is off travelling or moving abroad and would be lovely with a journal inside or given to the children as a back to school treat.
To make this you will need…
2 pieces of 8 x 10 card for the front and back of the bag.
2 pieces of 5 x 10 for the side panels.
Score along the 5″ side at 1/2″ & 4.1/2, you then need to score at 2.1/2 but just down to 4″, there is also some more scoring on these pieces but its easier to watch the tutorial below rather then me trying to write it here.
2 pieces of 4.1/2 x 4″ card for the side pockets.
Score along the 4.1/2 side at 1/2″ & 4″ then rotate and score on only one of the 4″ sides at 1/2″
2 pieces of 3.1/2 x 1.3/4 for the lids for the side pockets.
Score along the 1.3/4 side at 1/2″
1 piece of 5 x 9 card for the base.
Score on all 4 sides at 1/2″
1 piece of 8.1/4 x 4.3/4 card for the front pocket.
Score along the 4.3/4 side at 1/2″
Score along the 8.1/4 side at 1/2″ & 7.3/4
1 piece of 7.1/4 x 2.3/4 card for the lid for the front pocket.
Score along the 2.3/4 side at 1/2″
1 piece of 8 x 4.3/4 card for the main lid of the gift bag.
Score along the 4.3/4 side at 1/2″ & 1″
1 piece of 6 x 3/4 card for the hook.
2 pieces of 3/4″ x 11 or 11.5/8 what ever your A4 or Letter paper measures.
You will need some magnets, I used 5mm x 2mm diameter ones from Ebay
The papers used are from a shop in China so I’m unable to share any links.
Embellishments and tags to decorate.
Check out my full tutorial below to see how I made it.
I hope you have fun with this one, its a real labour of love and I would love to see any of the ones you make so please feel free to share any of my makes on my Mixed Up Craft Facebook page.
Happy Friday

Sam, this is an amazing project. I don’t think I have every seen a card bag made as detailed as this. The recipient would be totally gobsmacked at the amount of work that has gone into it. I am glad that your Blog Post has all the dimensions on it. Thank you for your continued inspiration to us crafters. :O)
